Yesterday, I played in my first session of a game in Japan!

Joining a new gaming group is always kind of tough. This was a D&D game, standard 3.5, in a homebrew world. I pitched a pretty complete character concept to the DM, and he seemed to like it. My character is...hmm....well, none of them read my LJ, so I might as well go ahead and say all. If one of them stumbles across it...well, I'll hope for the best. ;) My character is a triple agent. On the surface, she's a bureaucrat who works at the archives of the city the characters are based in (Ninnoreth), and deals in information there. Her primary job is information broker, and she'll gather information, smuggle, etc., for a price. Underneath that, she actually is an agent for the Long Knives, the secret police of Ninnoreth. She has spent almost 15 years in their employ (she's a gnome, gives me some time to work with ;) ), and in that time she has risen slowly but surely up their ranks. However, underneath THAT, she's actually a spy for Ninnoreth's enemies, Rual, and she's gathering information for them. However, the only reason she does THAT is that she's being blackmailed, and in truth she hates the lot of them and would much rather be in business for herself. :)

Whoa, kind of complicated! But I thought, with a group of people I didn't know, it'd be good to have a nice rich backstory, something to go off of. Anyway, the DM went for it, which kind of surprised me, and even cooked me up a costume base class (Broker, which is a modified version of Bard, and gets me some nifty contact-y type of special abilities). The players have already figured out cover number one, but they're a million miles away from thinking that I'm anything other than a secret police agent, which suits me fine. :)

As for the game itself, it went okay. It wasn't OMG best session even, but it also wasn't "I wouldn't go near these people again if you paid me." There were 5 out of 6 players there yesterday - C., who I'd already met and who is the only other girl; Evan, her husband and the DM for the game; Steve, who is a bit older than us and from Australia; Shevesh (or something - he's the one whose name I can't seem to get), who is from Trenton, NJ; and Rifik, who is from Canada. They seemed like an okay bunch of guys (sadly, no dating material here, though, sigh) whose RP styles I jibed with well enough. The game was RP heavy, which is nice, but still used the rules a fair amount, which is also fine with me. The session was relatively vanilla fantasy; the party is a bit strange - pretty heavily chaotic, fairly heavily neutral; I don't really help that balance I suppose - but Evan doesn't actually use alignment, so it's a bit looser than it at first appears. All in all, I think it's going to be fairly fun. It's looking like it's gonna meet every other week or so. I can say honestly I'm looking forward to the next time.

In other, related news, it does look like I'll be running Changeling. I've gotten on a listserv here, and it looks like, amazingly, two of us want to run, and both Changeling, but the other guy wants to run Lost, and from what I've heard I'd just as soon stick to 2nd ed. I borrowed the core book from C., and I'll read it through just to get myself up to speed on table top, but first I need to get me some sort of idea. The gamer sorts on the list will be meeting next Saturday, and so I need a basic game pitch by then to see if people are actually interested. So far, my brain is a barren and desolate wasteland, but, then, last night after I got home - it took me an hour and a half, mostly on the train, to get back from C. and Evan's, which is in Yokohama - my brain just rebelled and gave up, and I'm wiped today to - think I've been pushing my self too hard the last week or so, and I need to give myself a break. Still, must-have-Changeling-idea! :) Hmmm...
So yeah. Life is fine. I'm a zombie today, but that happens sometimes, and so I'm not gonna write more. I still have to update the WoT blog and do my Ni90 for the day.

Oh, and just so folks know, next Monday (a week from today) I will be leaving, early, for 7 days in Hong Kong and then 7 days in Singapore. I have NO IDEA if I will have internet access during this time - obviously, I'll try to find a cafe or some such - my goal is cheapest accommodations ever, so I can't imagine my "hotel" will - so if I disappear for the whole time, don't be shocked. ;)

Wow, Hong Kong and Singapore! Two places I'd love to go! Are you going just for fun? Are you traveling alone? I wonder if I would be bold enough to go alone, if I can't find someone to travel with me.

And oooh, are you going to miss 14 days of Ni90?! Gasp! (Or are you a better writer than I am, and write while on trips?)

Yes I'm going just for fun, and yes I'm going alone. I picked those two because they are safe for me to go alone, don't require visas, don't require vaccinations, and have people who speak English. And are cool. I'm a little afraid about traveling alone, but, well, I came to Japan alone. ;) If I can do that, I can go to Hong Kong for a week. :)

And I'm not planning to skip out on Ni90 - I'll have my computer with me, even with out net connection, and I've made quota every day this round, so I don't want to stop now - I want to finish this fricken novel. ;) I went on a few trips during Round 3, and while I wasn't able to make quota every while I was on them, I was able to make myself write something pretty much every day - I'm hoping to pull of the same this time around, but I guess time will tell. :)
