It's not that the internet has failed you, it's that the Van Gogh museum puts one helluva tight lip on it's stuff, essentially preventing the internet from gaining any knowledge.
However, in the two minutes of searching, I have learned the following: (a) the painting is also called "Dragoon and the depiction of the Franco-Prussian War" (b) if you have a JSTOR password (which you might, given your literary contacts), you might be able to see a digital copy of the picture here. However, since I'm not sure what the picture actually looks like, I can't tell for sure if this is the right one.
