Wow, a Transit Strike!
Dec. 20th, 2005 01:47 pmI'm very surprised to read that there is a transit strike in NYC. (What the NY Times Says). What blows my mind most about this article is the mayor, saying that school and such will go on. Now, when I was a student, my HS was 6 miles from home...this may not sound a lot to anyone not from/familiar with NYC, but it is, it really is a lot - certainly more than I could walk on a normal morning! And cabs cost $5 a mile! I'm starting to think that the mayor is a lunatic for not shutting the city down.
I don't really know why I'm talking about this...I just think it's amazing, with the number of people who need the trains and buses, that they'd strike...more amazed at the measures that are being taken to keep cars off the road (they're not allowing cars with less than 4 people in them to enter the city! I mean, daaaaamn)...amazed that they have police officers making cabbies take multiple fares at once...and most amazed that it sounds like most places, including schools, are actually trying to operate as "business like usual" even though 7 million people are commuters! At least my mom made it to Penn Station - she had to catch a train to where we are holding Christmas-y stuff this year - this apparently involved some work and she is surprised that she even got there.
Anyway, in other news, ended up at Mark's birthday party, had much fun, mercilessly mocked some movies, saw Mr. and Mrs. Smith, which was fairly awesome, ate some yummy cake, and generally had fun until about 5AM. That was a bad idea. I woke up at 7:30 yesterday morning, I got 4 hours of sleep before that. Result? Everything was so funny...times like this I wonder why anyone bothers with alcohol. ;)
Go Mets!!
