Introduction and First Steps (LJ, 8/24/2009)
I've spent the last two days continuing to work on the pattern. As a reminder, here' my main reference, and here's where I was on the pattern when I last posted:

On Monday, I went back to the drawing board to fix the arm hole...

...and ended up adding a whole lot so that it was more like what it should be. Of course, this necessitated redoing the top part of the pattern.

With that done, I'd finished the two easiest parts of the armor. The borders were nice and even and could be measured and all that. There's no other part of the pattern that's quite so easy to quantify. And so, of course, that's where the problems started.
I spent Monday evening primarily working on the bottom third to half of the pattern, and I made a lot of progress.

I drew the whole thing once, and was feeling pretty good about it, but when I tried to sketch out the middle third or so, I realized I had a serious problem: it didn't all fit!

I mucked around with it until it did all fit, though I wasn't super happy about it, and decided to go ahead and finalize the bottom part, but not before I re-drew almost the whole thing to try to make it a bit smaller.

And that was what I accomplished on Monday.
Yesterday, while I was working, I reflected on all of this, and decided that really I had no choice: I had to start the whole center again, and make the damn thing fit better.

Hence, my new blank slate.
When I sat down to work on sketching out the bottom, though, I realized what the whole problem was: I'm shorter and wider than the original figure. That's why everything won't fit right. Duh! I drew the whole thing out before finalizing it, and wasn't happy; I erased it all and started again, and finally got it to the point that it seemed like it might actually work. Once I'd done that, I measured out and finalized the bottom third/half, and the top quarter or so, and then I sketched out the middle just to be sure. I'm pretty satisfied with how it all turned out, though it ended up taking me doing the whole thing about 5 times...
Finished the bottom with sketch of the rest

Finished top and bottom

Sketched in middle

Today, I'll actually do the measuring and finalizing of the middle part, and from there...I don't really know what I do next! Probably draft the back, which won't take nearly as long, and then start to think about what materials and such I'll need - though I won't be actually making anything til after the trip.
Total work so far: between 12 and 15 hours.
