I definitely think cheating could easily have been accomplished; if I hadn't been certain I'd be buying a book with more information than I could ever need about it, and loaded with pictures, I'd have been sneakily snapping away also. :) It's so packed with people that it wouldn't have been hard....I love the idea of hanging it over your bed, must have been so soothing!
The churches really are spectacular! I knew about the marbles, only because I saw an exhibit at the Met last year about Pietre Dure (the use of bits of stone to make pictures - but not like mosaics) and some of these pieces were done entirely in different shades of marble. But just the lavishness of the decorations, and especially the use of colors that I know the pigments were very expensive, is really amazing - more than any other city I've been to, it seems like these religious icons were VERY important status symbols here.
I don't think I knew you'd been to Rome! When did you come? What did you see? Any recommendations? We've got two days left here and we've done most of the things on my list, so I'm open to ideas!
