If you think spending a day fighting a rampaging blood-thirst didn't have an effect on how Val sees things, you're sorely mistaken. :-) It was a good touch, having Ash come out and say why she was being so bitter and pissy; Val benefits from getting smacked upside the head by her own privilege every so often.
