It's been a few days...
Mar. 18th, 2006 11:32 amWell, we don't have the pics on a computer yet, so no pictures yet (we have pictures of potential wedding sites, pictures of
mistress_sin in potential bridesmaids outfits, and, once they are developed (since those were taken on a digital but these weren't) pictures of lots of guys in kilts. (Tuesday is short; Wednesday and Thursday are wedding ramblings, and Friday is general stuff)
Tuesday was boring, I worked most of the day. That evening,
mistress_sin got here, though, and we started talking about weddings in preparation for...
On Wednesday, I had made four appointments to go visit four wedding sites: Bear Mountain Inn, the Views at Mt. Fuji, Mansion Hill (the name has recently changed from Maison Lafitte, and Abigail Kirsch at Tappan Hill. It made for a long day over all - lots of asking the same questions over and over again. Mansion Hill was too small by far for the number of people we're likely to have (around 150), and Abigail Kirsch was too expensive, which left the other two. Now, my mom hated the Views at Mt. Fuji from the moment that she saw there webpage, but
deadmanwade and I both liked it best from about the same point. These opinions were solidified on both sides after actually viewing it, and so we hit problems almost immediately. Meanwhile, my father and
mistress_sin both tried to be peacekeepers, and more than anything it was really my dad who, as the voice of reason, kept it from becoming a pitched battle in the diner we stopped at (looking at all those places literally took all day, we left at 10:30 AM and finished at 5:30.) By the end of the day, we tentatively had thought Bear Mountain, which wasn't as nice as any of the others but was a little cheaper. However, after mom went to bed, I talked it over with
mistress_sin and also with
deadmanwade over the phone, and we tentatively decided that I was gonna sit mom down and explain to her that really, that was what I wanted, even if she didn't like it. I felt guilty about this, because, well, she's paying for it, but I really felt like the Views was "right" and Bear Mountain was "settling."
Thursday was the day of clothing. Pushing thoughts of the impending confrontation out of my mind (cause it didn't make sense to do it until Thursday night) we headed out to RK Bridal to find some thoughts on Brides' Maids dresses (pictures pending of how stuff looked on
mistress_sin). It went pretty well - mom had suggested a two piece idea as both more useful for the women after the wedding, and still be really nice. I wasn't so sure, but it turns out she was right, the two piece outfits looked great. There will be some discussion, but that all should be settled soon. (for reference, is the top we liked best and I don't see a pic of the bottom on their webpage.
Then, we headed over to B&J Fabrics which completely blew our minds, I've never seen so much fabric in my life, ranging from really cheap stuff to lace that was $500 or more per yard. It was...different. Spent some time there and finally choose a polyester satin crepe in cream which will be the foundation for the dress. It was $15 per yard, and I needed a whole lot of it - they had to order more for me - but it arrived before the end of the day, which was spiffy. Then was M&J Trim, which also blew my mind, they had so much amazing trim and buttons, poor Joann's will forever pale by comparison (I may end up shopping from M&J's webpage, they're awesome...). Found the main lace, and decided to buy some beads so that I could tackle some hand embroidery. The dress, then, aside from actually making it, is mostly finished. I expect (once I get the boning, interfacing, and lining, which I still need) it'll come out to about $300. Not bad, comsically speaking.
Finally, headed home to have "the talk." It went, really, pretty well. I found out that she didn't really like planning things like that, and that she found it stressful and unpleasant. I explained that really, the wedding needs to be something that I can get excited about, and that I needed to feel free to choose the things I (indeed, in the case of Mt. Fuji, that both of us!) wanted. The conclusion was that she'd name a number (still pending) that would represent my budget, and I'd take the reins from there. I'm a little stressed, now, cause that's a lot of planning, but I think it'll be okay.
Yesterday was Saint Patrick's Day. We headed out early to the parade, found a great spot in the sunlight, and stood out in the cold for three hours, watching the HS bands, the guys in kilts, the service men from Iraq, the police (including a bunch from Louisiana who got a lot of attention), Rudy Guiliani (one of many political types, but the only one I recognized), the firemen, and more. The nicest thing was certainly the 9-11 commemoration, as the firemen commemorated that 343 men who died by having 343 firefighters from throughout the city carry (from the many precints that lost men) carrying American flags. I thought it was way nice. Then, headed out to do various shopping like activities, including trying to find "Romantic Sex," a cool clothing shop which turns out, sadly, to be out of business, and then hang out in China Town. Picked up a copy of Advent Children, as well as various other nicknacks. (Found: Something Shiny, Super Powers, an ugly dog like thing with both big eyes and fur, and a postcard. Also obtained an excellent memory from the parade, which I will share at a later time.) I also grabbed a box of Italian cookies and canoli's from Little Italy; anyone who wants some should track me down before, say, the end of next week. :)
Then, met
bakanekotoo and
ultimabaka for dinner, which was really nice. Caught up on old times, hung out, looked at pictures of folk online, ate Beard Papa cream puffs, and generally had fun. It's nice to keep in touch with people. :) It's strange to realize that they are two of my oldest friends (I've known
ultimabaka since 1996, 10 damn years, and
bakanekotoo since 2000...freshman year of HS and freshman year of college, respectively.) Now I just need to get Minh to e-mail me regularly, and I'll be back in touch with all of my good friends from HS....
Today we'll wrap up some loose ends, then tomorrow we will go back to the Views at Mt. Fuji. They have a buffet on Sunday's, and we have a coupon to eat free, so we'll stuff our faces. If the food is good, all is settled, and we'll start planning from there. If the food is lousy, then we're at square one (maybe back to Bear Mountain?) and we'll figure it out from there!
I'll be back late tomorrow, see ya'll next week!
