I really do love the fact that Val and Ash started out detesting one another, and now are (in some ways) closer friends than Val and Kinsey are. They may not hang out for popcorn-and-movie nights on a regular basis, but Ash presently knows a number of things about Val that no other PC does, which counts for quite a bit.
