So I got home from dance, sat down at my computer, moved the mouse, and nothing happened. Puzzled, I restarted the system, and when I bent down to do so, I noticed what was wrong. Both my monitors had been unplugged. I left home at 5:15 and got home at 7:30; nothing is out of place, nothing if missing, and the door was locked. But both my monitors were unplugged and the monitor set up had been changed to one monitor, low resolution. And there's evidence that Jonie was freaked out about something.

She's not the only one. I'm seriously fucking creeped out. And I don't know what to do about it. I think I might ask the landlords to change the locks.

Can anyone think of a NORMAL reason this might have happened? Cause I sure as shit can't.

Well, [livejournal.com profile] saracariad is out of town for the week. Does anyone else have a key to your apartment? If not, I would call the landlords. They may have let someone in for some reason. *hugs*

Perhaps you can have someone sleep on the couch tonight? Tomorrow morning you might want to get a chain for the door, some 1" wooden dowels and a hacksaw (the dowels and saw are to create a physical block for a sliding door or window). I'm sorry!

I'm gonna talk to the landlords about changing the locks, and I was planning to put something heavy in front of the door tonight so that it'd be difficult/impossible to open. There are a small handful of people who have the key to my apartment but I can't conceive of why any of them might do this. My mom thinks that I should have someone spend the night to...I asked [livejournal.com profile] schenker28 to come over, maybe I'll see if he could stay...

Thanks for the support. I'm calming down a little...

Eeek! o_O

No, given what you've mentioned, I can't think of a normal reason as to why that might have happened.

Good idea to get the locks changed. I hope the landlords can help out.

The only normal thing I can think of is maybe Jonie was messing around down there, unplugged them, and got shocked. Then maybe it reset your moniter? Yeah, I'm stretching.

other than that, yeah, report to your landlords. And check for missing stuff!

Well, it's possible that being unplugged resets the monitors, and it's conceivable that the dog unplugged them. But none of the other stuff that hooks in to the computer was unplugged, and there are no gnaw marks...so I don't think she did. I've checked for missing stuff pretty thoroughly, and everything seems in order...it's just too fricken weird.

For what it's worth, I also think this is the most likely.

People keep saying this, but I can't conceive of how a freaked out dog would have pulled out only two cables, and not the cables that were closest to the fore or most tempting, nor how she wouldn't have knocked over things like my chair, which was right there, in her effort to flee.

The "dog freaking out" evidence, by the by, is not any where near my computer but was instead damage done to the carpet by the door, as if she were digging at the door to get out of the room.

My kitten regulalry unplugs the modem. But it's really easy for him to run past and knock it out of the wall.

Yeah, my computer stuff is pretty tucked away. :(

I'm still thinking that Windows might change the setup to 1 monitor, low-res, if it figures out that there's a problem with the signal going out. So I wouldn't be surprised if pulling out the plugs while the computer is on would change those settings.

I also think Jonie could have simply gone a little wild today because she's a crazy dog... after Occam's razor came up this evening in another context, it started to seem more plausible that there was some strange dog-psychology at work. Here's hopin' she's to blame.

Yeah...I really don't think it was Jonie. It's possible, strictly speaking, but incredibly unlikely that she would unplug nothing else...

Thanks. :)

There were a few other things minorly out place - specifically, the things on top of my computer - a pile of CD's which had been straight is now teetering, and my camera which had been on top of the computer had fallen off. It looked to me like someone bent over the tower to reach the cables. :(

Made it through the night, though...I'll talk to my landlords today about the lock...

Definitely change the locks, bar all doors, and lock/bar all windows.

*big hug* Sorry honey.

Wow...I would have been too scared to stay in the apt if that happened to me. I hope you get the locks changed soon and I hope nothing else like this happens in the future :-\

Me too. I was a little creeped out to be alone, but [livejournal.com profile] schenker28 came and hung out with me and then spent the night (on the couch!) so I wouldn't be alone. He's awesome. :)

I *am* awesome :) And I'm glad I didn't have to fight off any monitor-unplugging weirdos in the night.

BTW, this morning I caught Jonie in the act of carpet-attacking when she was in your room and she thought I had already left. So I hope the carpet isn't too ripped-up today.

Hm...it was untouched when I got home. But thanks for letting me know. With Jonie, once she's figured out she CAN do a thing, it's often hard to get her not to.

I don't know if we talked about this already, but there was the possibility of a theif breaking in, preparing to steal your monitors, and then getting chased off (perhaps scared off my your imminent arrival or something?)

Date: 2007-03-07 01:30 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] unforth.livejournal.com
They wouldn't have known of my imminent arrival until I was already in the house, and the monitor's seem a strange place to start, especially with my iPod and digital camera both sitting on top of the computer tower. So unlikely, I'd say. I don't know. And as long as it doesn't happen again, I don't really care.

Me too. I've known of things like this happening before...once, we got home and the shower was on, back when I lived in Binghamton. Mom told me a story about something like this happening to her, too...sometimes, maybe, random weird shit just happens and ya never know why... :)

Date: 2007-03-07 10:51 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] saracariad.livejournal.com
So, I don't like this story. I live there (sometimes) and I don't want people to steal our shit, or unplug our stuff! Just a really selfish question- did you check to see if stuff in my room is missing or tampered with? I mean, my room is closer to the door, and if there were a weirdo stealing our stuff, I'd go for my room first.
I also second that E is AWESOME.
Dyrecorn and Moonzie also have keys, but despite both of them being computermonkeys, I see no reason for them to fuck around with your monitors.

Like I said, nothing appears to have been moved. That included your room. I checked every room in the house, in case someone was lurking.

That said, I haven't had any locks or any such changed yet, largely cause I hadn't called you yet. :)
