It's Hard to Find a Home in NYC
May. 15th, 2008 07:55 amThere appears to be a pigeon living in my air conditioner. I don't intend to use the air conditioner, and the cooing is actually rather soothing. Normally, I'd let it be. Unfortunately, the day the Jonie dog figures out it's there is the day I get NO PEACE until it's gone, so I must figure out how to convince it to get going before then. Poor pigeon.
In other news, Christmas has ended up coming very early this year indeed. First, my brother gave me my gift for Xmas 2008 in January - a shiny PS3 - so no gifts from him or my sister-in-law. Then, after 5 months of self restraint, my will finally started to break down in regards to the main thing I actually want this year. The timing is surely due to my road trip in April, where I listened to all of the CDs I own and want to hear, and then listened to them again, and am now thoroughly sick of most of what I own. Since then, every time I walk past an electronic store, I think of the money in my bank account, and an evil voice whispers that I could go in and buy an iPod. Sure, it'd strain my funds, but I could do it. And, despairing, I remind the voice that I'm going to Europe and two conventions this summer, that I owe my brother a good birthday gift in July, that two of my closest friends are getting married in August, that my mother's birthday is in August, that estimated taxes are due in June and I owe 6 months worth, and I force myself to keep moving. Finally, it dawned on me that I wasn't going to make it through the summer without a iPod to replace my old busted one, certainly not until Christmas when I would get one promptly upon asking for it. With that in mind, I asked for it now, extracted a solemn promise from mom that she wouldn't just buy me more at Christmas, and got permission to go ahead and pick one up and have her pay me back.
So now, with my big gifts already received from both brother and mother, the biggest parts of my Christmas are done. Oh, there will still be odds and ends and nice stuff from both of my parents, but it's kind of interesting to spend most of the year preparing myself for a "disappointing" but not actually at all disappointing birthday and Christmas. (at this point, virtually everyone except for mom and sometimes dad lump my gifts together. :))
Oh, and I can confirm that I won't be able to go to California this summer. I just don't have the money. On the plus side, because I won't be going I can go to the Alkaline Trio concert in NYC on the 12th of July. Win!
