They're Baaaaack

Well, this morning confirmed something I wasn't prepared to mention yesterday but did suspect: the bed bugs are back. I woke up yesterday morning with two suspicious bites on my leg, and this morning with a big clump on my back. Oddly, I'm handling this much better than I handled having a cold yesterday, because I had a major breakthrough last night and am actually feeling pretty good about life, even some of the parts that really suck right now.

When the bed bugs went away last time, I had a list of things that were going to have to happen if they came back. That's now. The outline of the plan: put almost all of my belongings in storage, get out of my lease, and move to the cheapest, smallest studio I can find that'll allow the dog and I.

Step 1: Find my lease.
Step 2: Talk to a lawyer.
Step 3: Call my landlord and arrange for exterminator and argue about legal stuff.
Step 4: Pack for the exterminator.
Step 5: Contact a storage place.
Step 6: Depends on the results of step 3.
Step 7: Pack all belongings going in to storage by Monday at 1 PM, when the storage guys will come and pick it up.
Step 8: Contact a broker.
Step 9: Find a new apartment.
Step 10: Inform my landlord that I'm leaving.
Step 11: Be prepared for the exterminator, coming on Tuesday between 9 and 11 AM.
.
.
.
Step 100: Profit!

Wish me luck...

Dearest Friend: My heart goes out to you. Yesterday when reading your post I wondered if you were sick because of the bed bugs. Perhaps that is what is truly bothering you as your system is not going to want you to be bitten by bugs.

I would also call the state health department and even the CDC. This time, it's revenge.

I'm going to report them to 311, which is a city thing that handles all manner of complaints.

Thanks for the good wishes. Things'll be okay, I know it.

Ugh! I hope you can get out with no strings.

The lawyer thinks it's possible, but he's also told me the maximum amount of money I stand to lose, and it's not more than I can manage (it wouldn't be easy, but I could do it) so I'm gonna go with that.

Good luck. And :P to bedbugs.

Did you know that you can have all your furniture fumigated while its in a moving van? There are companies that do that now in big cities. Check out the anti-bedbug boards for details.

I've given my furniture up for lost, for the most part. I'm putting almost everything worth saving into storage - the bookcases, basically, plus all the books and most of the other stuff I own. When I move, I'll abandon my bed, couches, office chair and papasan, and just replace them - it's just not worth the extra trouble to me, really. And that only leaves a few odds and ends (ie the computer) for me to get as clean as humanly possible and bring with me to a new place.

Argh. I'm glad you have a plan. And I hope your lawyer is a good one. You deserve not only to be let out of your lease, but to be reimbursed for the cost of all the stuff you'll have to get rid of. :(

[identity profile] unforth.livejournal.com 2009-06-20 11:17 am (UTC)(link)
My lawyer seems like a pretty cool guy, those his rates are pretty high; hopefully things won't get to that point. I'm not gonna try for reimbursement unless they refuse to let me out of the lease - then I'll go for the whole enchilada. I'm just afraid that if I play hard ball they'll take me up on it, which would make my life very, very annoying for a while.

[identity profile] galiyah.livejournal.com 2009-06-20 01:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I can certainly understand your hesitation to take it to that level. I just wish they'd be responsible and do it of their own accord. :( That would be the right thing to do, after all.

Again?! That sucks.. Good luck with the plan, and feel better soon... If there's anything I could do to help, let me know :-\

Thanks, I appreciate the offer - I'm trying not to involve other people cause I'm worried about spreading the plague. :)

Geez, don't you get a break with crappy things? Hang in there and who knows, maybe your new place will be even better. :)

And kill them all! ...The bed bugs, I mean.:p

[identity profile] unforth.livejournal.com 2009-06-20 11:19 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know about a break, but I'll admit I've never had a year as full of different and often simultaneous crappy things as this one - usually my crappy things come spaced out by at least 6 months and rarely more than two at a time.

I'm gonna do my best to have my next place be kick ass, but it can be tough to balance "kick ass-ness" with "affordable" in NYC.

Death to BB!

World of suck but you seem to be handling it well. Plan, ho!

The Supernatural is really helping. I just keep reminding myself, hey, life could suck worse, I could be Sam or Dean... (just kidding... ;) )

I hope you guys had an awesome time, by the way! Don't forget - once you've tallied the wedding haul, if there's something you really want, it's yours - and if there's not, I'll send you a check. ;)
