I've got yet more housing paperwork to make sure gets done, but I wanted to share, cause I'm both excited and freaked. I spoke to mom and she believes that if I ask everyone in the family for money for Christmas, I can probably raise about $1000. This is enough money to buy pretty much the most expensive utterly non-essential thing I've ever seriously considered buying - the painting by Omar Rayyan that I saw at Gencon (see this post), called Man with Gold Earring (it's the default image on display at this link). That money won't produce until December, but I've been thinking about the painting all the time since I saw it August, and I've finally made up my mind. It will be mine. I just contacted the artist and asked if there was any smaller amount I could send him so that he'd hold the painting for me til I have the full down payment. The total buying price is $5,000. It's gonna take a while to pay for it all, but I'll manage. It's worth it to me, and that's all I really had to figure out. Guess this means I really am an art collector. Or something.

It's a lovely painting. Awesome - good luck with both the painting and the housing paperwork!!

Thanks. It seems like every time I turn around there's more of the housing paperwork, sigh...

That's a really neat painting. I'd say yes, you are a collector, since I know if I wanted it I'd be getting the $50 print. :D

That makes sense as a distinction. I've always wanted originals instead, though when I started in 2002 I couldn't afford most of them - I remember in 2003 I went in to the art room with $20 as my whole budget and I was determined to get as much as I could with it (I walked out with an original sketch, an original commission, and a print - I was very proud of myself, I was within budget)...it's only the last couple years that I've really been able to buy color originals...which is actually okay, since I generally prefer pencil and ink work anyway.

I'm mailing them a check for $200 today...that makes it very real. I'm a bit nervous, actually, it's so much money...but I can take my time paying it, some each month. I don't need to have it immediately, I just need to know that no one else is gonna buy it while I'm trying to afford it. :)

Yay for you! You'll get there. And when you do, you'll have a shiny new apartment to put it in.
