On May 4th, I wrote a post to commemorate a milestone: achieving 500,000 hits on my Flickr account. 8 months later, I get to celebrate the next milestone: 1,000,000 hits - or, 1,003,148 hits to be exact. As such, I guess it's time for another "State of the Flickr Account" update.

I joined Flickr in May, 2007, mostly because it seemed silly to take pictures and then not organize them in anyway, and another person I knew had used it to upload some pics of the Changeling game, so I thought it would be worth using.

I've currently got 34,386 pictures uploaded. Of them, a depressing 10,591 are currently unlabeled - I've been doing a worse job of this in the last 6 months or so, though I have institute and stuck to a strict policy of "no pictures unlabeled a year later." So far, that's worked out for me, but it's bound to be a problem sooner or later cause I just haven't been labeling them efficiently. Still, on the bright side, that means 23,795 of them ARE labeled (69.2%), and at least a third of the unlabeled shots will never be labeled and will be deleted to boot, as they are the museum labels of the art items in other pictures.

Increasingly, my photography has centered on museums, though it still continues to be an eclectic mix of the stuff that interests me - art, science, a lot of Civil War stuff, gaming type stuff, baseball etc. I've now got pics up from four Gencons.

The largest set of LABELED pictures is from the Louvre, which I visited in September. On three separate trips there, I managed to end up with 666 pictures worth keeping. Runners up include a set I took at the National Museum of Natural History in Washington DC, with 603 pictures and one of my sets from the Metropolitan Museum of Art (from November, 08), with 651 pictures. There are two sets that are currently unlabeled that are bigger. One from the Musee de l'Armee in Paris (September, 2009), contains 801 pictures, and will probably be in the high 300s once it's labeled - therefore not in competition. The other, however, I took just two weeks ago in Chicago at the Art Institute, and it currently contains a horrifying 1487 pictures - which, once I've labeled them, will probably still exceed 700 (there's a roughly but not perfectly one-to-one correlation of "pictures of the art object" and "pictures of the art object's label" - the second of which I delete from the Flickr account once I've transfered the info to the art object's image. However, I've increasingly been taking close-ups and different angles, so it's getting harder to predict just how it will break down). Still, until I label it, it doesn't get to wear the laurels of "the most."

Furthermore, in all fairness to the places where I take pictures, the Metropolitan Museum of Art has them all beat hands down. Though they are dispersed in different sets, currently 2,983 of pictures bear the "metropolitan museum of art" tag - and the true number is considerably higher, since some of the early sets I took there fail to bear the tag.

Unchanged from the past is the simple truth that the majority of my hits are for the anime and manga images I took - photos of items that I own. Of the top 20 images in my account, all but three of them are images from anime or manga items. The top two items have each recently broken 6,000 hits each (6,099 for #1, 6,051 for number two), and number 3 lags far behind with 3,481. My top ten non-anime/manga images are:

1. Nami and Sanji - an image of two cosplayers I saw while I was in Japan. 3,052 hits. (actual all-time rank: 4) (this was the number 3 non-anime image last May)

2. Ms. Marvel, Daredevil and Spiderman - an image of three "official" (company-hired) cosplayers, taken at Gencon in 2008. 2,390 hits. (actual all-time rank: 11)

3. Reticulated Python - the skeleton of one of the largest reticulated pythons ever found. 2,134 hits. (actual all-time rank: 14) (this was the number 1 non-anime image last May)

4. Mystique Costume - this is an image of the costume Mystique wore in the movie. You will not be able to see it unless you are a contact of mine in Flickr, because it was taken at an exhibit where photography was prohibited, and since last May I've decided to no longer disseminate such images. As such, this pic has gotten NO HITS in months, and yet is still this highly ranked - it was the #2 most non-anime hits in May. 1,500 hits. (actual all-time rank: 22)

5. House of Mirrors - an image of me at Fun Frolic in the house of mirrors. 1,113 hits. (actual all-time rank: 33)

6. Stick Figures - a detail shot of of IIT Mies Wallpaper at MoMA. 1,034 hits. (actual all-time rank: 41)

7. Native American Tools - a display of Paleo-Indian tools at the Mississippi River Museum. 925 hits. (actual all-time rank: 49)

8. Armor of Henry II of France - heavily embossed armor at the Met. 923 hits. (actual all-time rank: 50)

9. Hair - me, right before I cut my hair. 883 hits. (actual all-time rank: 54)

10. Airplane Dress - a dress made out of Plexiglass. 846 hits. (actual all-time rank: 60)

45 images I've taken have over 1000 hits each. 162 have 500 hits or more. 1762 images have 100 hits or more. On the other hand, 3,723 images have only 1 hit; 9,063 have none at all - the vast majority because they aren't labeled. On average, though, each image in my account has received 29 views. This proportion has improved since May, when the average image had 27 views. I generally get right around 2,000 hits a day, though looking at my month review, I had a day with as many as 3,858 hits, and as few as 953 (which was Christmas day, and very unusually low for me). I've had at least one day where I broke 5,000 hits in one day.

Flickr differentiations between "types" of views - views to my actual photos (868,202), views to my "photostream" (basically the home page) (75,754 views), views to my sets (56,164), and views to my collections (3,041). Though there is no "quick" way to check this, to the best of my knowledge my most viewed set is the one where my photos of Harry Potter doujinshi are - the set has 3,402 views.

Flickr believes this image to be my most popular photo - the Ms. Marvel, Daredevil and Spiderman image comes in second.

So, what's next for my Flickr profile (other than the 2,000,000 hit milestone)?

Playing around on etsy, I've had the idea that I could very easily and cheaply make cards out of some of my images and sell them for a couple of bucks each. I'm currently entertaining the fantasy that I might be able to produce a little money with this plan, aiming for a profit of about a buck a card. The current hope? Put together enough money to buy a new camera, because the lens on mine is starting to jam a bit too often for my taste. All I have to do is sell about 300 cards - which doesn't seem like that many, when compared to 1 million hits!!

Oh, and in the time I've written this post? I've got 17 hits.

Let me know how the etsy thing goes; I've been thinking about trying to that with some of my better London photos, maybe. Or even older things, though I'd have to finally get off my butt and scan them in like I've been meaning to do for years now.

I absolutely will share. :) I probably won't get to pursue it seriously for a couple months, though.
