What's Your Excuse?
So I woke up this morning at 8 AM (normal time) and realized that if I wanted to have a lunch break today, I really aughta vote before I went to work. This would make me late to work, but that was no big deal. I was running early, so I wasn't thinking I'd be more than a few minutes late to work. So it 8:30, I e-mailed work to let them know I'd be late, walked the dog, then took my wallet up to my room (it was in my coat pocket) to check where I was supposed to vote. Why did I need my wallet? Well, I'm still registered at my old, old address (the first place that I lived in Bloomington) and I didn't remember the address. All I knew was that I was registered in "Bloomington 16," but I could find any indication of WHERE this was. So I finally just entered my old address, which is on my drivers lisence cause they never sent me a new one. It takes almost 20 minutes (thanks to
kitsune_zen and
kniedzw for posting the links to stuff, by the by, that was very helpful!) and I'm no longer early at all, but I know where I'm supposed to go, and I head out.
I'm supposed to vote at Calvary Church, which is near BHSN. The directions say that I should make a right on to Arlington Road, which apparently crosses over 45 somewhere before 37. Try as I might, I cannot think of any such road, so I drive down 17th hoping I'll see it. Anyone who knows Bloomington better than me has already surely realized the problem I'm going to run into. Anyway, I don't spot Arlington, get annoyed, turn around, go back, don't spot it again, and finally decide that if it crosses over the highway, surely I'll see it, so I go on the highway, figure out that it's the only road that crosses over, and get onto it...and think, "wait, shit, this is 17th, this can't be right.........oh.......god, I'm dumb..." It's 9:15. I was supposed to be at work at 9. So I'm driving, and I'm looking for N. Prow Road. The map makes it look like it the road splits, and I notice the sign for Prow (which isn't a split, an actual turn) as I'm going by it. Annoyed, I turn around, go down the road, and look for the church. I finally find it (it was on the left instead of the right as the map had indicated, but by this point I'm so paranoid that I was checking both sides anyway).
Relieved, I park, go inside, start towards the desk, reach into my pocket for my wallet which contains my ID.......and it's not in my pocket. I was in such a hurry to get out of the house that I left my wallet by my computer, where I was using it to look up election results. I go back out to my car. Start it. Remember that due to how much I've moved, there is still the chance that this is the wrong place for me to be ANYWAY. Go back in, and at least one thing is good - this is the place!
Driving home, I completely lose traction on a turn and almost slam into another car. It was entirely my fault, too, I took the turn way too fast cause I was in a hurry. That's really the only thing that went wrong, but it was pretty scary too... ;)
Go home, grab my wallet, drive all the way back, vote, then go to work.
In the end, I arrived at work right at 10. An hour late.
So much for preserving my lunch hour. I'm not gonna get to take one.
But I voted, dammit!

And I feel like the annoyance and extra work was all part and parcel to the democratic process, some how... :)

Being late for voting always seems like a pretty darn good excuse for being late to something else.
