Results of an Experiment on E-Bay
Jan. 15th, 2007 10:15 amSo, about 2 weeks ago, it dawned on me that I spend too much money on manga. However, thoroughly addicted, I decided that I would try to find ways to get manga cheaper rather than cut back all that much. As such, I wandered over to E-Bay to see if it was possible to get manga cheaper. I set down so basic rules for myself to make this actually work.
1. No getting competitive. No matter what.
2. I will not pay more than 5 dollars a volume. No matter what.
3. Don't forget that prices include shipping, and factor that in to all estimates of cost.
4. Once I decide how much I'm willing to pay, I will not bid again over that amount.
5. I will not bid on something I wasn't fairly likely to purchase anyway.
I transferred $100 over to my Pay Pal account, and figured that if I went nuts and spent too much, I could cut myself off by simply not transferring more over.
So two weeks have passed. I've followed all of the rules to the letter except for #4, which I added an addendum of "except in extreme cases" too, because I decided to bid again on a pair of volumes that I had bid $1 on, and figured I could afford to drop $2.50 plus $1.50 shipping on two $10 volumes (in stores) that I wanted to buy anyway.
I have spent $50 of the transferred $100. This includes both my bids and all of the shipping.
I have bought the following manga: (prices listed in Retail)
Island, volume 2 - 6 (I already owned Vol. 2) Cover Price: $10/Volume = $50
Wedding Peach, Volume 1 - 6 Cover price: $10/Volume = $60
Popcorn Romance, Cover Price: $10
Dark Angel, Volume 5, Cover Price: $10
Zyword, Cover Price: $10
Yuu Yuu Hakusho, Volume 1, Cover Price: $8
Initial D, Volume 1 - 3, Cover Price: $10/Volume = $30
King of Hell, Volume 1 - 2, Cover Price: $10/Volume = $20
Total Retail Cost: $208.
Total Number of Volumes: 20
I deem this experiment a raging success. I've gotten a bunch of stuff that I wanted, some which I almost bought right before I started the experiment (Initial D Vol 1, Zyword), others of which I've wanted for a while (Island, Vol. 3 - 6), and some stuff that I found that looked interested and was dirt cheap (Popcorn Romance). All in all, I've spent an average of $2.50 on each volume, instead of paying retail plus tax.
I think I may win. :)
