Subconscious Preference

People don't recognize their own bias (in this case, race in the election) - this was actually way interesting - give it a try for yourself at and maybe learn a bit more about yourself than you knew. Apparently, according to my results, subconsciously I slightly prefer black people to white people and I have no preference between McCain and Obama. Consciously, of course, is a different matter completely. :)

Edit: In related news, [livejournal.com profile] skygawker posted an article on a topic that I've been looking for solid info on - Whether or not the 2004 election was stolen - I haven't had time to read the whole thing yet, what I did read definitely falls into the Op-Ed category of things, but still it looks quite interesting.

There should also be one showing just how damn sexist everyone is too. Thanks for posting. :)

Neat site, thanks! And I haven't read the whole article yet, but I wouldn't be surprised to find it true. They're starting the same stuff again this time with the purges.

Fascinating! I've been wasting all morning at work (since today there is some special event going on and I have no classes) doing these IATs. I'm displeased, but not surprised, at my implicit biases about race -- it did say I had a preference for white, despite the egalitarian attitudes I professed. But I was happy that their FAQ said that this doesn't automatically mean I'm prejudiced and that being aware of this is one of the main things to prevent actual prejudice. Heh. I've always figured in-group out-group 'beware of strangers' stuff is built in evolutionarily, and the FAQ noted that possibility too. Very, very interesting.

Despite my implicit preference for white faces, I still showed a strong preference for Barack Obama over John McCain and John F. Kennedy over George W. Bush. Heh. Well, those aren't so unsettling. ;) I hope that if it were some other Republican besides the one who I've loathed for the past 8 years or the one I'm hoping will lose next week, say Eisenhower or something, that I wouldn't have such a strong preference, though!

Really neat stuff. Thanks for sharing! And glad you liked the 2004 election article. Yeah, it's Op-Ed for sure, but it's still valid and important stuff!

Oh, and I just took another and wanted to share -- I have little to no preference for either young or old people. Wow, good for me, I'm glad to have scored with no implicit bias on one of them. :) Hey, I like old people. I respect them. And I like young people too. We are energetic.
